Our Church Leadership

Our church thrives because of the energy and style of the people who are a part of our leadership.  Here are a few of the people that make our church community special:

Rev. Canon Suzanne Culhane, M. Div.

May 27, 2018 to present

mthr culhaneMother Suzanne Culhane serves in two capacities in the Long Island Diocese. She was appointed by Bishop Provenzano, on the request of the St. Philip's Vestry, to serve as our 'priest-in-charge.'  In that role she provides pastoral care for our parish members and celebrates the Eucharist with us weekly.

She is also Canon for Stewardship for the diocese. In that role, she reaches out to each parish within the Long Island Diocese to preach and train their members in the spiritual and holy aspects of parish stewardship. This new position is intended to strengthen and sustain the mission of the Church. To this new role, she brings nearly 20 years of  expertise in providing development counsel to religious and not-for-profit organizations.

A graduate of Brooklyn's Fontbonne Academy, Canon Culhane is a lifelong Episcopalian and was raised at St. John's Episcopal Church, Fort Hamilton. Canon Culhane has studied classical ballet and ashtanga yoga, and enjoys praising God with diverse forms of worship.

Fr Sigamoney PortraitFr. Christopher Sigamoney, M.Div., D.Min.

May, 2017 ~ May 2018

Father Sigamoney (or Father Chris, as our parish popularly called him) was born in India and  was raised in the Church of South India, which is a member of the Anglican Communion. He provided gentle and loving ministry to our congregation during his time of service to us, and his sermons often contained jokes that undescored the thought-provoking ideas he presented.

Fr. Sigamoney received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Voorhees College, Vellore, the University of Madras (Chennai), India.  He responded to the LORD's call to ministry and, in 1981, received his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree from the United Theological College, Bangalore, University of Serampore, India. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Vellore, the Church of South India, in 1982, and served as a priest in that diocese until 1996, when he emigrated to the United States. Fr. Sigamoney received a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree from the New York Theological Seminary in 2002. This is the highest professional degree available for men and women already engaged in ministry.

Fr. Sigamoney began by serving in the Diocese of Long Island, New York, as a supply priest, and served in that capacity at a number of diocesean parishes before being called to provide steady ministry service to our parish by the Vestry.

Fr. Sigamoney's deep faith and devotion to Christian ministry is seen in his emphasis on end-of-life and critical care chaplaincy.  He as served as a Chaplain at the Interfaith Medical Center and as Director of its Chaplaincy Department for 10 years. He continues his pastoral care for hospice patients as Pastoral Care Coordinator with MJHS (Metropolitan Jewish Health System) and as a Hospice Chaplain in Queens.

Fr. Sigamoney is an avid gardener and proudly boasts he has "at least 30" potted plants under his care. He and his wife, Freeda, are the proud parents of two children, Cyril and Cecil.

KevinBean Sermon

Fr. Kevin D. Bean - Priest-in-Charge

2013 ~ 2015

“The church has always been a part of my life,” Father Kevin says enthusiastically.

Father Kevin began his ministry as Priest-in-Charge at St. Philip’s in October of 2013, previously serving as a parish priest in Worcester, MA; Manhattan; Marblehead, MA; Meriden, Waterbury and Darien, CT; Wilmington, DE; and Edinburgh, Scotland.

“I love the whole of parish ministry in all its variety. In 32 years of parish work, I have discovered gifts and learned skills which make parish ministry all the more a joyful adventure,” he says. He adds that his passion is to help build a “sense of shared leadership in the parish and stronger collaboration in the wider community and renew a road map for growing the church.” Kevin further describes his calling: “Howard Thurman said, ‘Don't ask what the world needs. Rather ask - what makes you come alive? Then go and do it! Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.’ I feel that exercising the role of Priest-in-Charge at St. Philip’s is most appropriate for me at this time, to bring my call and gifts and vision together to lead -with others- in a church that is continually welcoming the seeker and deepening discipleship, and discovering its call to join Christ's mission of repairing the world.”

He has been married to Megan, a Yale Divinity graduate and social worker, for more than 35 years; and together, they raised three children.
